Carnegie Laureate Gala Spotlight - Peter Lopez, composer

Today's spotlight is on Peter Lopez, a rising star and pianist who is our guest on Music and Musicians Around the Globe Daily Live Show! Learn more about his journey and plans for the future, get touched by his personality through the interview he will give on the show! On April 1st, his piece “Emmanuel Variations” was premiered by pianist, Ante Božić-Kudrić on our Laureate Gala at Carnegie Hall. Learn more and apply at: https://www.soundespressivocompetitio... https://www.progressivemusicians.com/ https://colorchestra.com Artistic and personal journey to a concert with orchestra on Carnegie stage. From Auditioning, to intensive study, to an Interview with Steve Robinson – Today’s program is about a musicians’ journey. Learn musicians’ stories, what brought them to music, what was their own journey to Carnegie Hall. Was it "practice-practice-practice"? Or is there more to it? As an internationally performed composer, Lopez traces his musical roots to a broad range of influences from his tenure as a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley (USA), as a Tanglewood (USA) Fellowship Composer, and as recipient of the George Ladd Prix de Paris (1976-78). The eclectic nature of Lopez’s mature style stems no doubt from having worked directly with composers of diverse approaches and philosophies during his early years at Berkeley and Tanglewood: with Joaquin Nin-Culmell, Andrew Imbrie, Edwin Dugger, Olly Wilson, Earle Brown at UC Berkeley (1972-1978); and with Ralph Shapey and Theodore Antoniou during his Fellowship at Tanglewood (1979). Even more influential to Lopez’s artistic development was his residence in Paris where he had the opportunity to listen to many live concerts of contemporary European composers as well as to attend numerous events at IRCAM. One of Lopez’s creative principles is that Composition Is Performance On Paper! No doubt due to this enduring philosophy, his compositions were recognized early in his career: with several prizes and awards including the George Ladd Prix de Paris and the Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize; with numerous performances throughout the United States and Europe; and with an LP recording of a major work for Male Voice, Chamber Orchestra and Live Electronics released on the 1750 Arch Records label. In 2021 this work, The Ship of Death in an abbreviated version, was rereleased in digital format by PARMA Recordings on the Navona record label. This same work received its world’s premiere in 1979 in the Netherlands by the Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Ernest Bour. Lopez is equally comfortable with experimental instrumental techniques (IFASIA for octet), electronics (Moment Pieces for Extended Piano), digital techniques (MISE-EN, Series I, II, and III), electroacoustics (The Ship of Death) and traditional methodologies (Visions des reflets et nocturnes for Piano and String Orchestra, Song of Thirteen Moons for Orchestra, and Aujourd’hui for Double String Orchestra). World premieres of recent works have been performed by the Sydney Contemporary Orchestra in Sydney, Australia (2017, 2018), the Ensemble MISE-EN in Seoul, South Korea (2018), and the Lviv Philharmonic Society in Lviv, Ukraine (2022). Navona Records released a recent work of Lopez, MISE-EN Series II Episode I for Amplified String Quartet and Acousmatic Sound, in July 2023. Navona also releases in January 2024 a piano solo piece from his series of piano pieces, Pieces From A Distant Land. Acclaimed pianist Anna Kislitsyna recorded this work in May 2023 at the beautiful Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, Massachusetts for this release. Pianist Jennifer Wang premiered this same work shortly thereafter in June at the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall in New York City during the Laureate Gala Performances produced by Progressive Musicians and Sound Espressivo. The Business of Managing Classical Musicians | Music and Musicians Around the Globe

Hosted by Chris Ka Long Au, this episode features Jack Price, formerly known as Dickran Altamian. Want to know how this current music industry is going? Look and listen no further! The indomitable JACK PRICE, the artist formerly known as Atamian, began his career in artist management in 1984 in response to his own career as an internationally renowned and celebrated concert pianist. Jack took on the role as manager for Dickran Atamian, the pianist, who knew the toils of self-management would require a ubiquitous trade name. After taking over Atamian's career, (a career that began with winning 1st prize at the 50th Anniversary Naumburg Competitions (50th Anniversary Celebration, October 21, 2025)@ Carnegie Hall, a landmark Carnegie Hall Recital, several Lincoln Center and Town Hall appearances, the first-ever digital piano recording release on RCA Red Seal (and incidentally, performing the only triple world-premiere [Carnegie Hall (Live), RCA (Recording) and PBS (TV)] in musical history of a major musical cornerstone work, the solo piano version of "The Rite of Spring") Jack was successful in garnering hundreds of orchestral engagements (which included concerto performances with Maazel, Comissiona, Leinsdorf, Zinman, Rozsnyai, Samuel, Schwarz, Hendl, DePreist, Meier, Nowak, Amram, de Coteau, Rivest, Torkanowsky, McGlaughlin, Morgan, Alessandro, Hovhaness, Semkow, Falletta and Mata to name a few) and two commercial recordings on Delos for Atamian. Artists that he has worked with closely include, Bolet, Arrau, Serkin, Romero, Mintz, Tree, Mannheimer, Mann, Brendel, Kim, Olevsky and Tortelier. His relentless and persuasive management style (evident in his playing) soon attracted other artists, mainly music directors, who also wanted a more assertive manager. Jack Price has become synonymous with true service to artists through hands on and highly-personalized artist management. Jack stresses to his clients the importance of market branding, decision-maker consideration and development of distinct career milestones that set artists apart from the pack. Jack is a devoted father of two and resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you for joining us today and throughout the season! Sound Espressivo Judges series, Olivier Chassain, guitar, France

What is the MOTIVATION of both competitors and Judges in taking part and advantage of Sound Espressivo's concept and originality? Building relationship between musicians from all other the world: a great new way of sharing between all of us! Apply by November 30 https://www.soundespressivocompetition.com/home Olivier Chassain was born in Paris in 1957. He began studying the guitar in Limousin with Roger Généraux and completed his training with Carel Harms. In 1977, he entered the Conservatory of Paris (the current Cnsmdp) where he obtained in 1982 a first prize for guitar in the class of Alexandre Lagoya; he was also awarded a prize for counterpoint (class of Bernard de Crépy) and a prize for harmony (class of Roger Boutry). Today, his triple professional activity makes him lead simultaneously: a career as a concert performer, which took on an international dimension when he won the first prize in the "Guitar Foundation of America international competition" in 1988, thus becoming the first non-American guitarist to receive the highest distinction of this competition worldwide renamed. The following year (in 1989) he made a major tour organized by the GFA, across the entire North American continent: he was invited there regularly for concerts and master-classes, as well as on other continents. a career as a composer: he is the author of numerous works, in particular for guitar, such as: “ Fantastic echoes ” i n memoriam I. Presti and A.Lagoya , “ Etoiles ”, “ Arion ”, “ De loin en loin ”, sonata for two guitars (1995), “ Doigts de fées ” (2010) for flute and guitar, sonata for solo guitar (2011)…, and educational collections such as “ Patchwork ”, “ Ad hoc ”, “ Brèves de lectern ”(2012)… a teaching career which took off in Orléans in 1978, following his first teacher, Roger Généraux (he was established after obtaining his CA at the age of 21), and which saw its accomplishment when he was appointed in 1992 at the Jacques Thibaud Conservatory in Bordeaux, then in 1994 to succeed his master Alexandre Lagoya, as guitar teacher at the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance (Cnsmdp), where he still teaches today. Olivier Chassain regularly leads, in addition to his conservatory lessons, instrumental improvement sessions within the framework of festivals, summer academies, as was notably the case in Dordogne from 1995 to 2010, at the Britten school in Périgueux directed by Jean-Jacques Rouveroux: this institute organized ad hoc courses throughout the year in all musical disciplines, and called on internationally renowned artists. Olivier Chassain thus had, for his summer internship, the opportunity to invite many friends, renowned guitarists, such as J. Cogan, N. Koshkin, SI. Fukuda, B. Kanengiser, D. Bogdanovic, SE Olsen, F. Zigante, L. Blanquart, H. Navez, Jim Smith. Since 2010, it has been organizing new sessions in Limousin, throughout the year. Olivier Chassain's repertoire displays a great eclecticism, from the Renaissance to the music of today. Passionate about early music, he has also devoted himself to the lute and the vihuela for many years, in order to transmit through this privileged approach the sound and the spirit of this music. He is also fond of French music from the Grand Siècle and romantic music, which he plays alone or in the company of eminent artists such as P. Gallois, Ph. Muller, P.-H. Xuereb, R. Pidoux, E. Aubier, F. Pierre, G. Millière ... Ardent defender of contemporary creation, Olivier Chassain is the dedicatee of numerous works for guitar (Stephen Dodgson, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, Thierry Pécou, Sean Heim) and of concertos: "Escales" by Roland Creuze: created in Bordeaux with the ensemble Musique Nouvelle and Michel Fusté-Lambezat, as well as that of Edith Lejet, "Flowers in the shape of diamonds", from the concerto by Alain-Michel Riou, and more recently by Alain Margoni. Olivier Chassain has made several records, under different labels, including "Almost a song" (Metronome recordings) which was crowned with the "Choc" of the World of Music, and "Eventail" by the review Classica. An album devoted to the complete compositions of Ida Presti - the world's first recording -, in duet with the Norwegian guitarist Stein-Erik Olsen, received a rave reception from music critics (ranked in the 'top 5' of the 10 best albums classics of 2009 in Scandinavia), under the Simax label. Several other recordings are in the pipeline, including a second album with his friend SE Olsen, for the Simax label, in a repertoire of original works dedicated to the Duo Presti-Lagoya.
