Nathan Cheung bio:
Nathan Cheung
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Nathan Cheung is known for his versatility as a soloist, collaborator, composer, and improviser. These roles are fueled by a life-long passion to understand the power of great music and tap into its potential to resonate with people from all walks of life. He maintains a deep interest in music outside of the classical canon and meaningful ways in which different styles of music can inform each other.
Nathan claimed the 1st prize in the 2019 Los Angeles International Piano Competition and won top prizes in the Wideman International Piano Competition, Seattle International Piano Competition, and Heida Hermanns International Piano Competition. After a two year period as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he joined the staff at Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music as an Instructor of Collaboration while maintaining an active performing career.
His love of making music with others spurs his robust activity as a collaborative pianist. Nathan’s achievements include collaborative piano fellowships in Music Academy of the West, SongFest, and the Aspen Music Festival. He frequently appears with professional artists such as Concert Artist Guild winner, Adam W. Sadberry, and faculty from Indiana University and Eastman. In addition, he is adept at navigating through opera run-throughs, new music ensembles, jazz combos, Baroque ensembles, world music ensembles, church bands, rock bands, and tango bands. This wealth of experience has allowed him to transgress boundaries of genre, instrumentation, and culture.
A dedicated teacher, Nathan is passionate about teaching piano to students of all levels. His students have won national competitions such as the United States Open Music Competition. He has given masterclasses and workshops for the Jacobs School of Music Young Pianists Program in Bloomington, IN, the Eastman Community Music School in Rochester, NY, and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
He received his doctorate and two masters degrees from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University. His primary teachers were Natalya Antonova, Jean Barr, Nelita True, and Thomas Schultz. Aside from music, he enjoys reading, spending time with people, and learning new things on YouTube.
