Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor | Part 4 We begin unfolding the story of the 2nd Movement, by pointing out the harmonic relationship between this movement and the one that just concluded and explain that this movement -with its theme and variation structure- serves almost like an intermezzo between movements. The movement is dominated by a “dotted rhythm” theme throughout. And the first theme comes to a gentle conclusion. BEETHOVEN’S UNIVERSE The Beethoven 5th movie is the first in a series of programs that will explore all nine of Beethoven’s great symphonies. In each program, Mr. Rapchak will examine each movement from each symphony and reveal the overall structure of each movement and the structure of the entire symphony. He does this through a combination of talk interspersed with excerpts he performs at the piano and music excerpts taken from a Naxos Records recording of the nine symphonies. In some cases, he talks over the music in what we call “play-by-play” sections. To accompany the audio in each program, the Virtual Concert Halls team has created a series of stunning visuals that follow the story as it unfolds. The visuals include pictures of composers Mr. Rapchak mentions in each program, the full score or piano reduction of passages he is discussing that are highlighted so listeners can follow along, images of musicians performing, wonderful landscapes to move the narrative along and, of course, images of Beethoven that are used judiciously throughout. For the Beethoven 5th movie, Lawrence begins right away with his passionate and entertaining narration. “It is terse, it is compact. Its dynamic energy is concentrated into a mere nine and a half minutes of music, the shortest opening movement of Beethoven’s nine symphonies. And it’s all the more stunning because of the bold unprecedented way in which it begins.” And from here he takes us on a journey throughout all four movements showing how they are intertwined and how Beethoven used a variety of harmonic and melodic techniques to power his visionary thinking. We also learn that Beethoven used a four- note theme in a few of his other compositions and that a piece by Cherubini that Beethoven almost certainly knew, has a passage in it that is startling similar to Beethoven’s famous opening theme in the 5th Symphony. We learn that the transition passage from the third to fourth movement had a profound influence on music and art and inspired Berlioz to write an evocative description of it. And, as noted, the entire program is accompanied by a beautiful and rich series of images that accompany the film and that enhance it in a uniquely beautiful way. In Episode 8 of Beyond Recording, we go behind the scenes of a recording of Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 — 1st Movement, exploring the often misunderstood difference between editing and mastering. Together with Gianriccardo Pera of CiMA Streams, we examine how production decisions can preserve the musical character of a performance — and how the relationship between soloist and orchestra influences every stage of the process. 🎼 Featured Recording Schumann Piano Concerto, Op. 54 — 1st Movement Butler Philharmonic Orchestra Kate Lee — Piano Scott Woodard — Conductor 🎧 What we'll explore • The characteristics of the piano — How register, dynamics, resonance and articulation affect the editing process. • Editing vs. Mastering — What is the difference, and why does it matter? We look at how editing constructs the final performance while mastering shapes the finished recording. • The art of the edit — How individual tracks are carefully aligned and edited so that transitions remain natural and virtually inaudible. • Mastering a piano concerto — How tonal balance, dynamics, depth and perspective are handled when a piano must coexist with a full orchestra. • Piano & Orchestra — Why the goal is not simply to make the piano louder or more prominent, but to preserve the musical dialogue between the soloist and orchestra. • Compression & natural dynamics — Why, in this production approach, compression is generally avoided on the piano and frequency-spectrum work is used to achieve a more refined balance. • Schumann's musical dialogue — How the first movement's constant exchange of ideas between piano, winds and orchestra influences production decisions. 🎹 Three musical excerpts from the recording will illustrate the discussion, allowing us to hear the production choices in context. 👥 Guest Gianriccardo Pera — CiMA Streams Hosted by Anna on the Virtual Concert Halls Live Music Channel. 🌍 We bring classical music news and events from international stages to audiences around the globe. 🎥 ABOUT BEYOND RECORDING In every episode of Beyond Recording, we go beyond the final recording to explore the technical, creative and practical sides of classical music production — from recording and editing to mastering, marketing, publishing and distribution. For him, music has always been a lifelong companion and a sanctuary for reflection. He continues to share his journey as a dedicated amateur performer alongside his professional career in financial technology. He is currently based in Vancouver, Canada. 🏆 Competition: 23rd Washington International Piano Artists Competition 🎶 Event: The Festival of Music 2026 🎥 Presented through: Virtual Concert Halls 📍 Washington, D.C. The Washington International Piano Artists Competition celebrates exceptional pianists aged 31 and older who are not professional pianists, highlighting the remarkable level of artistry that can be achieved by musicians whose primary careers may lie outside of music. The Washington International Piano Arts Council was founded in 2001 by John Gardecki and his wife, Chateau. The idea for the organization grew from John’s own experiences participating in international piano competitions for amateur pianists, including the Concours International des Grands Amateurs de Piano in Paris and the Van Cliburn International Piano Amateur Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Inspired by these experiences, John and Chateau envisioned bringing a similar opportunity to Washington, D.C.—a place where talented pianists could perform, compete, and share their love of music regardless of whether piano was their full-time profession. Their vision led to the creation of the Washington International Piano Arts Council. A central part of WIPAC’s mission is the belief that great musical artistry is not limited to full-time professional musicians. Many of the pianists who participate in WIPAC competitions and concerts pursue careers in entirely different fields while continuing to perform at an exceptionally high level through their dedication, discipline, and love of music. Among WIPAC’s major annual events are the Winners Grand Prix Concert, featuring winners of international piano competitions for non-professional adult pianists, as well as the annual Festival of Music and the Washington International Piano Artists Competition. We invite you to enjoy these semifinal highlights and celebrate Cheuk Hin Ivan Wong's musical artistry alongside the outstanding pianists participating in the 23rd Washington International Piano Artists Competition. 🎶 Thank you for joining us for The Festival of Music 2026! #FestivalOfMusic2026 #PianoCompetition #Piano #ClassicalMusic #PianoRecital #WashingtonInternationalPianoArtists #WIPAC #PianoArtists #PianoSemifinals #ClassicalPiano #LiveMusic #VirtualConcert #MusicCompetition #CheukHin #IvanWong Смотреть Смотреть 33:17 How to Become a Registered Artist on Spotify | Beyond Recording Ep. 4 How do you claim your own Artist Profile on Spotify? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings, an Album Spotlighting Music by Under- Represented Composers, Will Be Released on May 1st New EP Featuring AAPI/BIPOC Artists Aims to Promote Understanding and Tolerance and Combat Racism New York, NY—April 26, 2021 On May 1st, pianist and music producer Donna Weng Friedman will be releasing the EP album Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings. The album, which will be available on Spotify, Amazon, Tidal and other online outlets, is intended as a response to the wave of violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals, and aims to promote understanding and tolerance among people of all backgrounds. It features Ms. Weng Friedman and soprano Indira Mahajan performing music by composers Margaret Bonds, Beata Moon, Florence B. Price, and Chinary Ung. The performers and composers are all members of the AAPI and/or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) communities. https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/donnawengfriedman/heritage-and-harmony-silver-linings The album’s release date is timed to coincide with the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. “I am an Asian American concert pianist, and like so many of us, my heart aches from the ongoing hate crimes against our AAPI community,” says Ms. Weng Friedman. “Each piece on this EP album helped get me through the pandemic year, which started with my being assaulted on the street of New York City for being Asian, and ended with my entire family getting sick with COVID-19.” All proceeds from the album will be donated to the Korean American Community Foundation (KACF) an organization that supports the AAPI community through philanthropy and education. “The KAFC is committed to fighting for diversity, equity and inclusion, and will not tolerate racism on any level,” notes Ms. Weng Friedman. “I learned an incredible amount from their virtual information sessions, talks and panels over the last year.” She adds, “My hope is that this album will resonate with people of all ethnicities who are looking for a way to help support our AAPI community. By listening to each track on Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings, they can enjoy the glorious music of incredible but under-represented BIPOC composers and musicians while also making a small but valuable contribution to the AAPI community.” For more information, contact: Donna Weng Friedman donnawengfriedman@gmail.com Смотреть Смотреть 53:21 Sadie Goodman, flute - Sound Espressivo Laureates' Recital Program: 2:57 Jules Mouquet - La Flûte de Pan (I. By listening to each track on Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings, they can enjoy the glorious music of incredible but under-represented BIPOC composers and musicians while also making a small but valuable contribution to the AAPI community.” For more information, contact: Donna Weng Friedman donnawengfriedman@gmail.com Смотреть Смотреть 48:58 Mio Imai, violin - Sound Espressivo Laureates' Recital Accompanied by Mark Livshits, piano 3:16 Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole (I. Однажды, на заре христианства у славянских народов, в Польшу забрел странствующий купец, еврей Абрам Проховник.
