Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor | Part 4 We begin unfolding the story of the 2nd Movement, by pointing out the harmonic relationship between this movement and the one that just concluded and explain that this movement -with its theme and variation structure- serves almost like an intermezzo between movements. The movement is dominated by a “dotted rhythm” theme throughout. And the first theme comes to a gentle conclusion. BEETHOVEN’S UNIVERSE The Beethoven 5th movie is the first in a series of programs that will explore all nine of Beethoven’s great symphonies. In each program, Mr. Rapchak will examine each movement from each symphony and reveal the overall structure of each movement and the structure of the entire symphony. He does this through a combination of talk interspersed with excerpts he performs at the piano and music excerpts taken from a Naxos Records recording of the nine symphonies. In some cases, he talks over the music in what we call “play-by-play” sections. To accompany the audio in each program, the Virtual Concert Halls team has created a series of stunning visuals that follow the story as it unfolds. The visuals include pictures of composers Mr. Rapchak mentions in each program, the full score or piano reduction of passages he is discussing that are highlighted so listeners can follow along, images of musicians performing, wonderful landscapes to move the narrative along and, of course, images of Beethoven that are used judiciously throughout. For the Beethoven 5th movie, Lawrence begins right away with his passionate and entertaining narration. “It is terse, it is compact. Its dynamic energy is concentrated into a mere nine and a half minutes of music, the shortest opening movement of Beethoven’s nine symphonies. And it’s all the more stunning because of the bold unprecedented way in which it begins.” And from here he takes us on a journey throughout all four movements showing how they are intertwined and how Beethoven used a variety of harmonic and melodic techniques to power his visionary thinking. We also learn that Beethoven used a four- note theme in a few of his other compositions and that a piece by Cherubini that Beethoven almost certainly knew, has a passage in it that is startling similar to Beethoven’s famous opening theme in the 5th Symphony. We learn that the transition passage from the third to fourth movement had a profound influence on music and art and inspired Berlioz to write an evocative description of it. And, as noted, the entire program is accompanied by a beautiful and rich series of images that accompany the film and that enhance it in a uniquely beautiful way. He studied with Naoko Tanaka at the Juilliard School, Oleg Rylatko at National Symphony Orchestra Fellowship program, and with Aaron Rosand privately. Fedor is a devout promoter of classical music: in 2009 he became one of the founding performer-members of Arts Are For All Ages, a non-profit organization in Washington DC area, which provides classical music concerts to retirement communities. The organization’s membership consists mainly of high school young musicians, who volunteer their performances, and has grown to over 50 active performer-members and is providing about 70 concerts per year. Teaching young musicians is another of Fedor’s passions: he has taught students of different ages and levels, he also coached young violinists in preparation for youth and school orchestra auditions. Fedor loves methodical approach to teaching, and he has built a system of individual plans and written follow-up assignments which he gives to his students to help them make better use of their practicing time. He has participated in many competitions, music festivals, piano recitals. In the recent years, he has played and won numerous First Places and various winner’s trophies/medals/certificates in the Peel Music Festival, the OMFA Provincial Festival, the Steinway Piano Competition, the North York Music Festival, the Unionville Music Competition, the New York Open Music Festival and Sound Espressivo Competition. Jeffrey also passed the RCM Level 8 Piano Practical Examination in December 2020 with an outstanding mark. He enjoys performing and sharing his passion for music. Chinese-born pianist Junwen Liang began his piano studies at nine and made his solo debut at the age of thirteen. Junwen has performed in major cities in China, Canada, and the United States. His achievements include the most recent two-time concert appearances at Carnegie Hall and Kimmel Center in Philadelphia; one public broadcast performance of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto with Ithaca College Orchestra on WSKG radio in New York State, and a solo performance broadcasted on Philadelphia’s WRTI Classical Radio. Upcoming performance engagement in 2022 – 2023 includes live and virtual concerts in France, Italy, and the United States. He was also invited to participate in music festivals such as Lunigiana International Music Festival, Baltimore International Piano Festival, Philadelphia Young Pianists’ Academy, Orford Musique, Art of the Piano, and Aspen Music Festival. Junwen has won major prizes in multiple competitions such as The American Prize, Juliusz Zarębski International Piano Competition, New York International Piano Competition, and Philadelphia International Piano Competition. Junwen recently completed a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree at Penn State, where he served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Piano. Her international concert activity includes such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York; Laeiszhalle in Hamburg; Sala Maffeiana in Verona; Casa da Musica in Porto; Ruth Taylor Recital Hall in San Antonio; Hylton Performing Arts Center in Virginia as well as theaters and concert halls all over the world. In 2019 an album with Maria Narodytska playing Brahms was released under the label OnClassical for further worldwide distribution by Naxos of America. This work has already got a positive review at Rai Radio 3 – one of the most important radio stations in Italy, devoted to classical music. Her second album for Nationalux as a winner of “The most beloved artist” prize at Richter IPC was released on the 18th of September 2020. In 2021 and 2022 she released two Schubert albums under OnClassical, published by Naxos of America. Narodytska graduated from Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine as a pianist under the guidance of prof. Natalia Tolpygo and as a composer, guided by Iryna Aleksiychuk. Since 2015 she continued her piano studies under prof. Ralf Nattkemper in High School of Music and Theater Hamburg. Now she studies with prof. Stepan Simonian in Hamburg as well as in Graz with prof. Dr. Milana Chernyavska. Maria Narodytska is supported by Vere Music Fund since 2021. Participating in numerous master courses, Maria had a chance to take lessons from Daniel Pollack, Lily Dorfman, Andrzej Jasinski, Lev Natochenny, Grigory Gruzman, Mikhail Arkadev, Akiko Ebi, Olga Kern.
