He has primarily used braille to learn music and it is an incredible pleasure to hear him play. Difonis’s family emigrated to the United States in 2000 on a temporary visa in search of educational resources for their son. They lived in New Jersey, then Brooklyn, N.Y., and finally Staten Island, N.Y. While in Brooklyn, they were connected with Lighthouse International, now Lighthouse Guild, where he was a member of the children’s program. Difonis learned Braille and enrolled in the Filomen M. The organization’s membership consists mainly of high school young musicians, who volunteer their performances, and has grown to over 50 active performer-members and is providing about 70 concerts per year. Fedor loves methodical approach to teaching, and he has built a system of individual plans and written follow-up assignments which he gives to his students to help them make better use of their practicing time.
